Introduction
This New World angry earth DPS build is suitable for expeditions that contain the angry earth mob type. Currently, the only angry earth expedition in the game is the Garden of Genesis. This build focuses on utilizing the spear and hatchet for maximum DPS output.
You can check out our Expedition builds info guide for the full breakdown of damage types versus mob types and consumables you should utilize within each expedition.
In this guide, you find information about the abilities you should take, your attribute distribution, gear, consumables, and how to play the build.
Mastery Points
This angry earth DPS build is going to utilize the hatchet and the spear. The hatchet is going to be dealing out a lot of damage against this mob type, and the spear can be utilized to place a big rend on your targets, cc your targets, and place a bleed on them as well.
Hatchet
You will want to utilize the following active abilities for your hatchet
- Berserk
- Rending Throw
- Raging Torrent
You will want to fully upgrade your berserk in order take advantage of the self sustain, cc break, and the uninterruptible attacks. It’s important to utilize the berserk as much as possible to receive the increased damage output.
You will only want to take the active ability for raging torrent to leave room for other passives that provide more value to the build.
Rending throw will be upgraded fully. You will want to have this ability active as much as possible to rend your targets consistently. Therefore, you will want the cooldown reduction the full upgrade provides. The increased duration of the rend is also nice to have.
If your group already has plenty of rend you can switch this ability out for infected throw. In this case you would want to fully upgrade infected throw and put your additional point into the desperate refresh passive.
The remaining passives you take are all centered around increasing your damage output.
Spear
You will want to utilize the following abilities for your spear
- Perforate
- Sweep
- Skewer
You will want to fully upgrade both your perforate and skewer abilities.
Your perforate ability should be used every time it’s off cooldown in order to take advantage of the rend it provides. Skewer is great to add into the rotation for the empowerment on critical hit and the long bleed duration.
You will only upgrade sweep once. This will give you grit on sweep, and give you a nice crowd control ability.
The remaining passives are centered around increasing your damage output.

Attributes
As the DPS you are going to want to put out as much damage as possible. You should ultimately be shooting for the following:
- 300 strength (315 strength at 625 gear score)
- 200 dexterity
This means that you will not be distributing any points into constitution. This can be very difficult when first starting out. You will want to acquire ward gear and have a solid group when pushing your constitution so low.
If you do not have ward gear or are just starting out you can push your constitution all the way up to 150. This will provide you with plenty of constitution and survivability for the expedition. As you go you will want to work on reducing constitution and pushing out more damage.
Equipment
For this build you will want to be in the light armor category. This means you will need to be wearing a combination of the following:
Head | Chest | Gloves | Legs | Boots |
---|---|---|---|---|
Light | Medium | Light | Light | Light |
Light | Light | Medium | Medium | Light |
Light | Light | Light | Medium | Medium |
Medium | Light | Light | Medium | Light |
Armor
In conjunction with being in light armor you are going to want to shoot for having the following perks:
- Angry Earth Ward
- Skill Perk
- Refreshing
The following skill perks are recommended:
- Perforate (desired)
- Enfeebling Skewer (optional)
- Empowering Rending Throw (optional)
- Keen Berserk (optional)
- Bleeding Sweep (optional)
Having these perks on your gear is not mandatory to complete the expedition. However, by having ward on your gear you will be able to push your constitution down to the 5 constitution mark allowing you to dish out quite a lot more DPS for your group.
Other acceptable perks on your armor consist of Elemental Conditionings, Freedom, Vigor, Invigorated, and Elemental/Physical Aversion.
A decent farmable option for Ward gear is the “Weald” set of armor that you can obtain from drops in the Garden of Genesis.
Weapons
The optimal setup for your hatchet is the following:
- Angry Earth Bane
- Refreshing Torrent
- Rogue/Keenly Empowered
The optimal setup for your spear is the following:
- Angry Earth Bane
- Rogue
- Keenly Jagged
You can replace Refreshing Move and Keenly Empowered if you desire, or if you grab a weapon that has the other 2 perks and a random 3rd perk on it. Angry Earth Bane and Rogue are both optimal for this angry earth DPS build.
There are a few good farmable options until you can obtain the above perks on your weapons. The farmable options are as follows:
- Javelin of Dryadic Empowerment (Spear)
- Angry Earth Exterminator (Spear)
- Bonechopper (Hatchet)
- Edenil (Hatchet)
Jewelry
Amulet – Health, Divine, Refreshing or Blessing of Forefathers.
Ring – Keen Awareness, Blood Letting, Refreshing or you can use Smooth Bone Ring or the Featherweight Ring
Earring – Refreshing Toast, Refreshing, Regenerating or Doom’s Chance from the Lazarus Instrumentality Expedition.
Gems
For weapons, if the difference between the elemental percentage and the weapon percentage is 30% or more then an elemental gem is the optimal gem.
Therefore, if you are utilizing a spear and a hatchet DPS build in the Garden of Genesis your hatchet would do +20% damage to the angry earth mobs in the expedition and your spear would do +0% damage to those mobs. In this case, you would want to slot a fire gem (+30% damage to angry earth) into your spear, and an opal into your hatchet.
If you are running mutated versions of the expedition you will need to be aware of the mutation type. This can change the gem you slot. Your armor gems when running mutated versions should be cut pristine elemental gems such as the following:
- Amethyst for Void
- Ruby for Fire
- Amber for Nature
- Aquamarine for Ice
Runeglass Gem Upgrades
For your runeglass gems you would want to utilize the punishing variant to deal additional damage with your melee attacks.
Heartgem Rune
The heartgem rune of choice for this build is the Brutal Heartrune of Detonate. You can activate the heartrune to deal quite a lot of burst damage. However, you will take additional damage while it’s charging so be aware of when you utilize the heartrune.
How to Use Build
This is a very high damaging build. You will want to utilize your hatchet and berserk to deal tons of damage to your targets. If you have the refreshing torrent perk you should try and hit 3 or more mobs with your raging torrent when you use it. This will give you continuous uptime on the ability. You will also want to weave your rending throws into the rotation anytime it’s off cooldown. Maintaining uptime on rend is important for your overall damage output.
If your group has rend in excess then you can utilize your infected throw in the same manner as you would utilize your rending throw.
You will also want to be dodging in between attacks with your hatchet. Your hatchet will have an opal slotted so you want as much uptime on the additional opal damage as possible.
You should switch to your spear and utilize it to CC your targets, apply rend, and bleed your targets whenever your perforate is off cooldown. Again, this will allow uptime on your rend allowing you dish out maximum DPS.
If you are running Garden of Genesis or other angry earth content, having blight potions on hand is also useful. Also ensure your Angry Earth trophies are in-house, utilize potions, honing stones, and attribute food for maximum damage output.
